New York and NYU

There’s no college experience quite like the one offered at NYU.

New York is a spectacular city, incomparable in its variety of cultural and educational resources. Tisch students quickly learn how to take advantage of everything the city has to offer, both educationally and recreationally.

We help students take the city head-on by helping them find internships, full and part-time jobs, and freelance opportunities; inviting guest artists into the classroom; incorporating performances and museum exhibitions into curricula; and exposing students to the immense variety of social worlds within New York’s neighborhoods. This city is more than just a playground for students: It’s an integral part of the Tisch educational experience and plays an essential role in their artistic, intellectual, professional, and personal development.

The university does everything it can to keep students safe and help them navigate their new environment. Browse the topics below to learn more about our resources for students.

Safety

NYU Campus Safety is focused on maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, 24/7. We employ a large, well-trained corps of campus safety officers who are a highly visible presence across campus and especially in student residence halls. NYU is located in one of the safest areas of New York City, the safest large city in the U.S., and our campus has a reputation for attentiveness to security.

Transportation

Campus transportation services are available daily while classes are in session between university facilities and student residences. For routes and other information, go to www.nyu.edu/ride.

University Transportation services run between the Washington Square campus and NYU residence halls. For routes and more information, visit our real time map.

Additionally, free overnight Safe Ride Van Service is operated seven days a week during the academic term, midnight to 5 a.m.

NYU also offers short term bicycle rental options. Learn more here.

For travel around the rest of the city, students will likely use public transportation. The MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) runs the subway, train, and bus systems.

Housing

Students can find more than housing in one of our many dorms in Manhattan and Brooklyn -- they’ll find a community and a home away from home. The Office of Residential Life and Housing Services works in coordination with other departments and student groups to provide and maintain comfortable, safe, and secure living environments. If you’re looking for assistance in your off-campus apartment search, NYU offers staff and services to simplify the process of navigating New York City real estate. Learn more about living off campus.

Health & Wellness

Students and parents can rest easy with the knowledge that we provide a safety net for basic healthcare at NYU. The Student Health Center is a resource and service center for all current students. We offer hassle-free appointment-based and walk-in medical and counseling services at either no cost or very reduced cost to all NYU students, whether they have health insurance or not. Learn more about the Student Health Center and all the services offered.
