NYU Tisch Dance Professor, Andy Teirstein presents new film, "El Niño Mudo"

Monday, Oct 21, 2024

This Fall, with support from the Tisch School of the Arts Dean's Fund, Dance Professor Andy Teirstein composed a setting of a Lorca poem and created a short film with choreography and performance by current NYU Tisch Dance MFA candidate, Xin Ying.

"El Niño Mudo" (The Mute Boy) is a compelling poem by Frederico García Lorca about a boy looking for his voice, which is stolen by the king of the crickets. Teirstein set this poem with Soprano voice, Marimba and Trumpet. From the beginning, Teirstein envisioned "El Niño Mudo" as a choreographed short film in the strange and beautiful setting of Opus 40, a sculpture park and museum in Saugerties, NY. He was also very fortunate to have the inimitable Xin Ying, current candidate in the NYU Tisch MFA in Dance: Interdisciplinary Research program, as choreographer and dancer; the remarkable AJ Jones-Sojola as Soprano voice; Valerie Naranjo on marimba; and Finn Dewitt playing the Boy and recording the trumpet part. The film is 5 minutes in length. Translation is by Merwin. The mask, or tiara of roots, is crafted by Stanley Allen Sherman of Mask Arts.

For a short time, the film will be accessible at the provided Youtube link below.
